/// Plečnik's Žale in Ljubljana (Garden of All Saints) is a unique cemetery complex designed by architect Jože Plečnik and built between 1938 and 1940. Instead of a single mortuary, Plečnik created a park-like complex featuring a grand entrance portal with a double-deck colonnade and a series of individually styled farewell chapels named after patron saints or parishes. Through his design, he aimed to soften the sorrow of death, creating a serene space that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The complex holds an inspiring story of overcoming resistance and financial limits. City authorities originally wanted a single large building, but Plečnik insisted on separate chapels for a more intimate farewell. Facing tight budgets, he cleverly combined affordable local stone, wood, and concrete to achieve a monumental feel. Each chapel draws inspiration from diverse architectural traditions, blending classical antiquity with regional folk elements.
