Taking well-aligned repeat photos

The value of Ephemeros comes from photos that line up. A perfectly aligned repeat photo makes change visible; a misaligned one just looks like a different picture.

Use the ghost overlay

When you capture at an existing spot, the app shows the previous photo as a translucent ghost over your camera view.

  1. Stand where the spot description tells you to.
  2. Move until fixed features — rooflines, horizons, poles — sit on top of their ghost.
  3. Watch the level indicator: keep the phone upright and level.
  4. Take the shot only when the ghost "locks" visually.

Practical tips

  • Match the framing, not the light. Different weather and seasons are exactly what we want to record.
  • Hold the phone in the same orientation as the original photo.
  • Small steps matter: moving 30 cm sideways shifts the whole frame.
  • If the original standpoint is blocked (parked car, crowd), come back later rather than shooting from the wrong place.

Your photo is reviewed after upload — well-aligned photos are approved faster and earn your capture streak.
